Choosing a Plumber

It is rarely good new when you have to phone a Plumber. But if you make the correct choice and choose the right plumber then it can make

things simpler. If getting a plumber, or indeed any tradesperson has always seemed more luck than judgement then just follow these simple steps and satisfaction is almost guarateed.

First, decide just how urgent your need for a plumber is. If water is gushing out from under the kitchen sink and flooding the house it might be best to call out one of the rapid response services (some of these plumbers are listed below). It is not advisable to try and become an instant DIY plumber, as water and electricity don't mix and there are very serious risks in this type of situation. It does make sense to know where the main incoming water mains supply can be turned off, as well as how to stop the hot water supply from completely draining the loft tank (if applicable). They are generally dearer than you local 'jobbing' plumber but are much more likely to be used to emergencies and getting to them fast. They will generally be well equiped and stop any leaks efficiantly and often be able to make a permanent fix.

Of course, it makes sense to check there charges to ensure you are dealing with a reputable plumbing company and not the occassional cowboy setups charging £500 call out and £200 per hour!! It may very well be that your insurance covers the job, so it is worthwhile having there number displayed prominently in the house. They may even have preferred plumbers.

Explain the problem as clearly as you can and let them know just how important it is. Check how long the company is estimating it will take to get to you. If it does not seem fast enough call another firm and see how long they could be...why not call a 3 or 4 to see who can be at your house soonest?

Whilst you wait can a neighbour help? Many people are DIY enthusiast these days PLUS a neighbours house is more likely to be similar to yours so they might know how to turn the water off. People you don't have much to do with are often surprisingly sympathetic in a plumbing crisis.

Such firms may also be your choice for less urgent jobs ...or you might prefer a local 'jobbing' plumber. We have supplied some names and numbers here too.

It can be difficult to know if a plumber (or , again, other trades people such as Electricians) are suitably qualified. Gas fitters can become CORGI registered and then display there Corgi number on there literature and vehicles. You can check on the authenticity of this by contacting the main Corgi Office. But there is no similar, simple system in place for general plumbers.However many of them are Corgi registered as they also carry out gas based work such as central heating installation, so you might like to select one who is corgi registered.

If you are updating the plumbing in your home then it is worth ensuring that suitable cut off taps are installed and carefully marked to allow more control should a leak occur.
